The iconic Red Wing Boots hail from the city of Red Wing, southeast Minnesota, and was settled by Europeans in the 1850s. Red Wing was incorporated as a city in 1857. The city was named after a famed tribal chief, who was succeeded by a Dakota tribe of the Sioux who ruled this region before the arrival of the white settlers. Today, Red Wing has a population of 16,000, and features handsome brick buildings along the banks of the Mississippi.

Originaly a workboot company. Red Wing developed a unique anatomy to their boots to ensure quality, comfort and durability for the workers who donned their proud products. Many of the Red Wing work boots are made using the Goodyear welt construction.  The welt, a thin strip of leather or rubber which surrounds the main body of the shoe; is attached to the insole of the shoe, and this is  sewn to the outsole. It’s an elaborate, time-consuming method producing the highest quality shoes that are as durable as they are comfortable. Welt construction makes re-soling of boots possible, guaranteeing continued, long-term use.

During a complex fitting process, parts of leather are sewn together for the formation of the main body (the instep) of the shoe. Red Wing still use the same Puritan sewing machines that did the job when the company was founded, over 100 years ago.
